Maldives’ former vice president Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Thursday after he was found guilty of the assassination attempt on the president last year.

Adheeb who was handed a 10 year prison sentence on Monday after the Criminal Court found him guilty of possessing a hand gun had been charged with terrorism over the blast aboard the presidential speedboat in September last year which authorities have now confirmed as a plot to kill president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

President Yameen escaped unhurt but his spouse Fathimath Ibrahim and a presidential aide was injured in the blast.

Two of his former bodyguards also charged in the case received 10 year prison sentences.

According to a defence lawyer, chief criminal judge Abdul Baaree Yoosuf who took over all of Adheeb’s trials recently had sentenced the ex-VP to 15 years saying that he had already a terrorism conviction.

Similar to recent hearings, Adheeb was sentenced during a closed door hearing citing national security.

In addition to the terrorism charges, the ex-VP is also facing massive corruption charges.
